Best sunset dates in Barcelona

Here's the local secret: Barcelona's beaches face east, so the sun sets behind the city, not over the sea. For a sunset date go up to a garden that's still open at dusk: the Turó del Putxet, the Montjuïc gardens or the Mirador del Poble-sec. The Bunkers del Carmel now close before sunset, and Collserola is closed for now.

Why it works for a date: A hilltop garden with a wide view over the city to the sea, and far fewer people than the famous viewpoints. Open until around sunset, so it's one of the best free sunset dates left.

2niteMeet tip: It's a short walk up from Gràcia: have a drink on a square first, then climb for the light.

Plan it like a local

  • Check the sunset time and arrive 45 minutes early: the best light comes before the sun actually sets.
  • Bring a layer. Hilltops get windy once the sun goes.
  • Check the closing time: most city gardens close around sunset, and the Bunkers del Carmel close before it.
  • Plan the way down: know which bus or metro gets you back to a neighbourhood for dinner.
